Dear Friends and Family,
When I reflect on the past year, I feel deep awe. I left my job at CU Boulder at the end of August 2022 and took this leap into rest and the uncertainty of play.
I have been so supported in this journey. From the skilled and creative local carpenters, plumber, and electrician who helped create a tiny house home base for me in Colorado, to the encouragement and belief of good friends in taking this leap.
At Deer Park Monastery outside of San Diego, I was held with space and freedom by the monastic and lay friends during the six months I spent there. I met so many wonderful people from around the world and had deep conversations about how people are meeting these times with their practice and in daily life. For myself, this has been a deep practice of letting go, of learning how to receive care and support from others, and to live joyfully in community with others.
At the end of June, my friends My Dung Tong and Jonathan Borella, (and with the support of many other friends), we offered a three day peer-led meditation retreat at Harmony Pines Camp outside of LA at the end of June. My Dung and I then embarked on a cross-country road trip to visit Morning Sun Mindfulness Community and offer InterPlay and sound healing to sanghas on the East Coast, getting to visit the incredibly kind friends of Mindfulness Practice Community of Fairfax, Wake Up NYC, Denver Wake Up, and practice friends in Ann Arbor and Chicago!
Across the miles this past year I visited meditation practitioners and communities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Alabama, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Washington, Washington DC, Virginia, New Jersey (land of Tolls!), Pennsylvania, and New York!
When I left the monastery in January, so many sangha and InterPlay friends and community members held me with such love and care, offering shelter, food, and to share your lives for a few days. It has been a joy to be in your daily lives for a time.
In 2024, I am preparing to launch an organization called Gather the Wild Collective to offer nature-based mindfulness programs that integrate movement, art and music as workshops, classes and retreats. I welcome your guidance, support, and collaboration!
There were so many incredible moments in 2023. I’m sharing stories, music, and guided meditations in the coming months about this sabbatical time, as well as future projects that are being born from these experiences. If you’d like to hear updates for these, please let me know that you’re interested in occasional email updates or follow us on the socials (@body_wisdom_surfer and @liro_liminale)!
